The joy of Eid, whether it is Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha, increases with the preparations and rituals surrounding it. Since the home preparation holds a special significance, it becomes an opportunity for families to create beautiful memories, especially for children. These memories stay with them even as they grow into adults and become parents themselves. Therefore, it is important for mothers to make these moments special by turning them into cherished memories linked to their love and attention to their children.
Among the most memorable and beautiful moments for a child is the family session where mothers and children make gifts from simple yet attractive materials. When a mother puts effort into creating something unique and joyful, it adds to the festivity of Eid. Additionally, mothers can come up with many gift ideas for their children and guests. In this context, we spoke with the event planning expert, Raghda Al-Ashab, who shared simple and delightful gift ideas for children during Eid al-Fitr. Some of these gifts can be made using household materials, and others are inspired by the school atmosphere, as outlined below:
Family Picture Gifts
Collect some family photos that hold precious memories for you and the children. Some children love to see pictures of themselves as newborns. You can surprise your child with these photos and print copies to keep. Then, make simple and beautiful photo frames using available home materials such as colorful ribbons, shiny or metallic paper. Afterward, you can give these framed pictures to family members.
You can also create crochet or knitted frames for photos, for example. If you enjoy knitting or crochet, you can frame your child’s picture in a knitted frame. Alternatively, you could make a frame shaped like a favorite character, such as Barbie for a girl or Superman for a boy. This personal touch will surely make your child happy and proud to keep the photo. Be careful when selecting characters, ensuring that they do not have negative influences on your child.
Wrapped Gifts
Children love receiving wrapped gifts as it sparks their curiosity and excitement to open them. Even a small gift can be presented in a wrapped box to delight your child. For instance, you can place the Eid gift money inside a wrapped box along with some chocolates or a piece of Eid cake. You can also turn it into a fun activity by hiding these wrapped boxes around the house and asking the children to find their own. They will enjoy the excitement of discovering their gifts.
Another idea is to prepare wrapped boxes with ready-to-use contents for the child, such as a drawing book with crayons, some dried leaves, and glue. When they open it, the child can start drawing on the leaves and paste them in the book. This gives them an opportunity to learn and create during the holiday.
Handmade Gifts
Children love handmade gifts, especially when they get to create them themselves or when they watch their mothers make them. For example, you can give the children small glass or acrylic jars and fill them with various types of dry legumes such as beans, chickpeas, lentils, and kidney beans. Encourage the children to arrange the legumes into artistic shapes. You can show them examples from the internet, so they can try to replicate them, helping them develop new skills while having fun.
This activity not only results in beautiful decorative pieces but also encourages the child’s creativity, attention to detail, and teamwork. It can help them understand the importance of organization, cleanliness, and accepting feedback from others in a collaborative environment.
Gifts for Family Gatherings
Prepare small sacks made of burlap, satin, or tulle fabric to hold treats such as candies and sweets that children love. These can be given to the children during family gatherings, like when visiting grandparents or extended family members. The children will enjoy sharing and comparing the number of sweets they've received and even exchange them, creating a fun and educational food experience.
You can also collect small toys, both for boys and girls, wrap them, and present them to the children. This can be done alongside their Eid money (Eidiya). Presenting these toys during a family gathering, such as at the grandmother’s house, will help children feel a sense of belonging to the elders and enjoy spending quality time with them.
These small gestures and thoughtful gifts create lasting memories for children, making Eid an even more joyful and meaningful occasion.
